WILLIAM JACKSON– SAME EVENING

I had just started walking, not really sure where I was heading. My anger took me in the direction of the army camp and when I realised where I was I decided to see if I could talk to Pete or Tom and see if they could help. I reached the main gate and asked, “Please may I speak to Captain Andrews or Staff Sergeant Benson please?” The Corporal on the gate sent a Private to pass the message on and after several minutes waiting both Tom and Pete arrived. Pete asked, “What’s up Will? Is something wrong at home?” Nodding and then looked around me, not wanting to spill family matters in public, replied, “Yes, but Katie and the children are fine. So are Annie and Sam. It’s Lizzie, she is in trouble.” Pete looked blankly at me but Tom bowed his head, clearly understanding the problem. Pete asked, “What sought of trouble? How can we help?” I must have looked unsure as to what to say next, as Tom replied before I had a chance to speak, “Do you want one of us to come home and help talk to her?” Tom then added, mindful of where they were standing, “Sir, I’m still on duty; can you help?” Pete still looked confused, so I replied, “I don’t know what to do with her. I really don’t. I’m just so angry she did this, when all Katie and I have tried to do is bring her up properly.” Pete asked, “I’m still on light duties because of my leg so I can come home for a few hours. What trouble did you say she is in William?” Tom chuckled and replied instead, “Sir, you really don’t understand, do you?” Pete shook his head and Tom continued, “What about the Dad, Will? What has he said for himself?”

Shaking my head, I replied, “I don’t know. I left the house before he was given a chance to speak.” Tom added, “Well at least he is at the house to talk to. That’s something.” Pete finally seemed to have cottoned on to what they were saying and asked, “Are you saying that Lizzie is pregnant?” Tom started laughing and after a few seconds I joined in as well. I eventually replied, “Yes, what other sort of trouble would she be in?” Pete tried to look hurt and upset but his smile pushed through as he replied, “Well she could have been in trouble with the police. I know Katie always feared she’d do something stupid by hanging out with older friends, and maybe break the law to impress them. I’ll come home with you now if you want Will. See what I can do to sort this out.” I nodded and replied, “Thanks, but I’m not going home. I can’t stand to be near her right now. I’m still too angry. I’d hate to do something I’ll regret. I’m not my Father. I’ll never be my Father and I won’t let Lizzie make me become my Father either.
